Irene Efesiou is an Architect, Emeritus Professor of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) and Visiting Professor at Frederick University in Cyprus.
Her architectural career is characterized by her work as a Professor and researcher at the School of Architecture of National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), and by her applied work as an independent practitioner.
She has always believed that in Architecture theory, education, research and practice are inextricably linked in a mutually influencing relationship, creatively fuelled by all.
The protection of Cultural Heritage with terms of viable-sustainable development, Interdisciplinary cooperation, constant research and updating, knowledge of traditional and modern technology, architectural design as it relates to construction, as well as the exchange of ideas and exposure to European and international influences, are the basic elements that have shaped her chosen path.
Between 1981 and 2018 she taught Construction in the department of Architectural Technology of the Athens School of Architecture. Her scientific field was ‘Architectural Technology and Design in Existing and New Buildings’. From 2006 she also taught in the postgraduate program ‘Protection of Monuments’, where she was Program Director for the academic period 2016-2018.
Since 2018 she is teaching at the postgraduate program ‘Conservation and Restoration of Historic Structures and Monuments’ of Frederick University in Nicosia, Cyprus.
Her architectural interests on research, educational and professional levels mainly focus on the conservation and restoration of historic monuments, complexes and sites including the Architectural Heritage of the 19th and 20th century, the renovation and refurbishment of homes and commercial spaces, bars and restaurants, but also the design and supervision of new, cutting-edge projects.
Her professional body of work – either as a collaboration or solo has a broadly themed spectrum extending from specialised interdisciplinary restoration and enhancement studies of monuments to modern commercial spaces, habitations, mobile theatre, furniture and interior design.
She has participated in many conferences, seminars, international workshops, interdisciplinary research programs and has published many reports, scientific articles and notes with relevant scientific content.
She is fluent in English and French, written and oral.
She is the mother of Alexandros Andypas, 34 years old.
